BOTOX® Cosmetic Treatments - Lines and Wrinkles
BOTOX ® Cosmetic is used for the treatment of fine lines and wrinkles of the face caused by overactive muscles. The injections relax the facial muscles and reduces the visible lines and furrows. The use of BOTOX ® Cosmetic is ideal for improving lines and wrinkles of the forehead, frown lines between the eyebrows, and the crow's feet area around the eyes. BOTOX ® Cosmetic may also be used to treat excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) of the underarms, hand, or feet.
According to The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, 1,294,782 BOTOX treatments were performed in the US in 2005, making this the most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedure; this was a 16% increase from the previous year.
Candidates for BOTOX ® Cosmetic treatments are usually persons between the ages of 25 to 70 years old. This treatment works nicely in younger individuals because it prevents repeated wrinkling of the facial skin and subsequent deepening of the facial lines. BOTOX ® Cosmetic is also a nice adjunctive treatment for patients who have undergone facelift, chemical peels, or laser resurfacing. It is safe, effective, and only takes a few minutes. BOTOX ® Cosmetic may also be used in conjunction with soft tissue fillers such as Restylane, Radiesse, and Sculptra.
The full effect of a BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment will not be present for 5-14 days following injection. The muscle relaxation is reversible and lasts for 3 - 6 months (average 4 months), depending upon the number of previous treatments. A "memory response" may develop with previous injections.
BOTOX ® Cosmetic is not recommended for those individuals who are pregnant, have neurologic disease, or are taking aminoglycosides (ex: gentamicin, streptomycin) or other medicines that interfere with neurologic transmission.

BOTOX® Cosmetic Treatments - Hyperhidrosis
BOTOX® Cosmetic is also FDA-approved for the treatment of severe underarm sweating that is not adequately managed with topical agents. Severe underarm sweating is a medical condition known as severe primary axillaery hyperhidrosis, which involves overactive sweat glands. In hyperhidrosis, sweating significantly exceeds your body's normal requirements for cooling. This is an embarrassing problem that is often refractory to other treatment modalities. If underarm sweating is significantly interfering with your daily activities and Antiperspirants and deodorants haven't worked, you may be a candidate for BOTOX® treatment. BOTOX® works well to control hyperhidrosis of the axillary region and it is the most common area treated for hyperhidrosis. Results typically last 6-9 months.
